Do you lay awake at night, wondering about a strange hissing sound that seems to be emanating from beneath the floor? You need to focus on this, as it could quite possibly be a significant water leak. What do you need to look for in order to confirm your fears, and what should you do about it?

Long-Term Problems

Plumbers will often tell you that this type of problem can be difficult to track down and most challenging to rectify. Nevertheless, it is something that you do need to address, as otherwise your water bill is going to be through the roof and you could cause long-term damage.

What's Going Wrong?

The majority of leaks beneath a home start off as just a trickle and eventually build up slowly over a number of months or even years. If your house is built on a solid foundation, a persistent water leak could cause damage to it and if you have a wood frame structure, there is even more trouble ahead.

Water coming into your home from the city system is pressurised, and if there is a leak, the liquid escaping under pressure will cause that "hissing" sound that you hear at night. If the sound seems to be intermittent, this could indicate that the water pressure is rising and falling and the sound may become more intense as time goes by.

Looking outside

Have a look around the home to see if there is a lot of mould or mildew presence, together with mushrooms and other plants or weeds that thrive in excessive moisture. You may also notice some cracking around the edge of the foundation and even small sinkholes where the land has given way to an extent due to the water.

Looking inside

Inside the home, you may also notice that water is pooling underneath the carpet leading to damp patches. If you have hard flooring, sections of it may begin to warp and you may also notice mildew or mould contamination in hard to reach areas.

Of course, you'll really notice that you have a problem when you get your monthly water bill, but you should realise that something is wrong before that, as the water pressure throughout the house will be below standard.

Don't Waste Another Moment

The time to take action is now, while something can be done about the problem and before major damage occurs. An emergency plumber from a place like P1 Plumbing & Electrical will be able to locate the source of the leak and rectify the situation as soon as possible.
